About Us
The mission of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, within the Schulich School of Medicine, is to conduct research which contributes to a better understanding of the interplay between microbes and the immune system.
The mission of Dr. Barr’s research laboratory is to advance fundamental understanding of virus–host interactions that govern the emergence, persistence, and pathogenicity of human viral pathogens. We combine cutting-edge molecular virology, immunology, bioinformatics, and containment-level research to elucidate the mechanisms by which viruses evade innate immune defenses, establish infection, and persist within the host. Ultimately, our work aims to translate mechanistic insight into effective antivirals, diagnostics, and intervention strategies to mitigate emerging and re-emerging viral diseases.
Responsibilities
The Research Scientist will provide guidance and consultation related to a variety of research functions in the area of bioinformatics and genomic analysis, supporting high-impact studies at the intersection of viral and host genomics. The role will facilitate research by participating in research study design and implementation and by providing expert guidance on best practices for project development, implementation, and evaluation across the full research lifecycle, from experimental design to data interpretation. The Research Scientist will strengthen the organization’s ability to analyze large-scale genomic and multi-omics datasets through the development of robust, reproducible bioinformatics pipelines and the application of advanced AI and machine learning approaches to understand viral infection and host response. The role will oversee research operations, foster interdisciplinary research collaborations, and provide guidance to trainees, technical staff, and/or postdoctoral scholars to address complex research problems. In addition, the role will set research goals and objectives, carry out and oversee original and independent research, develop new research initiatives, and prepare grant applications. The Research Scientist will also select and develop methods for data collection, publish and present findings, and develop innovative research approaches that enhance research productivity, support the generation of clinically meaningful insights, and contribute to the organization’s scientific excellence in a rapidly evolving research landscape.
