About the Role

Your role as an intern at the Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious intern for a period of 6 months, start date in consultation. In this internship, you will contribute to the development of a deep learning model for the automatic recognition of silver hallmarks from RGB photographs of historical objects. Hallmarks are essential for art-historical and conservation research, yet identifying them manually is time-consuming and requires specialized expertise. Working for the Rijksmuseum

You will join a multidisciplinary team of conservators, scientists, and digital heritage specialists within the Rijksmuseum. The team is dedicated to improving access, documentation, and research capabilities for precious metal collections as part of long-term digital heritage initiatives. As an intern, you will contribute to the development of an end-to-end deep learning pipeline for silver hallmark identification. You will work on-site in Amsterdam and collaborate closely with museum professionals from different disciplines.

What will you contribute?

You are a motivated and analytical student who enjoys working at the intersection of AI and cultural heritage. You are able to work independently while also collaborating effectively in a multidisciplinary environment. You have a critical mindset regarding data quality, modeling choices, and results, and you are willing to work on-site at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

In addition, you:

  • Are enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate program in the Netherlands as a student during the entire internship period (Data Science, AI, Computer Science, Chemometrics, or a related field)
  • Have experience with Python
  • Preferably have experience with machine learning libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or scikit-learn.

Your responsibilities

  • Process and analyze a large dataset of silver hallmark images from Rijksmuseum objects
  • Train, optimize, and evaluate neural network models for hallmark identificatio
  • Design and implement data augmentation strategies to address variations in lighting, wear, and surface texture
  • Assess model robustness and test generalization to hallmark images from other museum collections
