About the Role

Job Description Summary

With the growth of the Grid Solutions Integration NAM Region business portfolio and increased work scope and complexity of our customer projects, the Civil Engineering Manager (People Leader) shall lead direct reports, sub-disciplines, and contractors. NAM GSI encompasses ACS, FACTS, Service, and HVDC Segments. GSI is under of GE Vernova's electrification businesses, part of Grid Solutions.

The GSI NAM Region Civil Engineering Manager leads a team of civil engineers, direct reports, supervises and coordinates civil engineering design team assignments & responsibilities in their discipline which include civil engineers and is considered as a technical referent for the teams. The Civil Engineering Manager is accountable to the Engineering Manager-PEM/Civil Engineering team to meet department KPI's and the performance of their team. The Civil Engineering Manager role is a hands-on role that may include detailed design project work.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

As the Civil Engineering Manager, you are responsible for optimized resource planning, recruiting and hiring, retention, annual performance coaching, salary & bonus planning and communication, continuous quality improvement, training, and development plans for civil engineers. For projects, you will guide and direct lead civil engineers at project launching phase & during project execution, engineering process follow up, and ensure the proper management of interfaces with our partners and main suppliers. You are accountable for the proper allocation of civil engineering resources required to execute the projects, to identify and review/approve design subcontractors to align resources with the workload plan and optimize design budget. You must work as a team with other engineering managers and disciplines with respect & integrity. You develop quality procedures, processes, and organizes knowledge capitalization to improve engineering efficiency. The Civil Engineering manager may lead projects or initiatives to support the department as assigned by the Engineering Manager.

  • Demonstrate team leadership experience, oversee, lead & coordinate the civil engineering team, coordinating design efforts across discipline managers, including both internal and external consultants and subcontractors. Drive your team to deliver to customers on time and on budget.
  • Accountable with your team for civil engineering design budgets, schedule adherence, technical change orders, and quality on ongoing projects. You ensure that the civil Engineers are following the Quality Management System and Code of Conduct; engineering schedules are updated regularly with achievable task duration and resources including design gate review plans formalized and tracked to completion. You are accountable for meeting the engineering KPI targets on project activities - including On Time Deliverable (OTD), Say-Do ratio for scheduled activities, Average days late, cost of poor quality, and technical-related project budget deviations.
  • Support your team in design strategy definition, design tasks and deliverables, assignment of resources to start engineering, design safety, code compliance, project performance, and the availability of tools, templates, references, and standards.
  • Oversee, lead, & coordinate project execution procedures, conduct regular internal team meetings, performance development meetings with your team members, review development plans with engineers, perform skills mapping for your teams and grow competencies. Support department and business data gathering requirements for metrics and reviews.
  • Support the proposal team with resources, technical validation, engineering work scope & labor hours review, execution plan, and statement of clarifications, assumptions, and exceptions based on customer RFP, specifications, Scope Of Work, applicable standards, regulations, and accepted industry practices.
  • Update resource and workload plans on a regular basis while monitoring utilization & billable time, engineering budgets, Design Change Notices, Budget Deviation Requests & Cost of Poor Quality, non-conformances, and scheduled training.
  • Lead civil engineering team to manage technical interfaces with sub suppliers & partners, prepare input data, and check consistency. Support team to analyze customer technical requirements and ensure compliance with customer requirements.
  • Support team to establish, based on tender and contract analysis, the civil design project strategy and the list of documents/studies/deliverables to produce
  • Drive business direction through technical knowledge. Drives team to provide customers with the best solutions that positively impact business. Encourages team to validate technical options proposed to the customer and provide cost optimization in all design. Support team to resolve technical conflicts.
  • Support team to prepare subcontracting bid packages (Scope, Deliverables, Inputs, Schedule) and to check design subcontractor deliverables and performance.
  • Support sourcing and procurement in the definition of technical specifications, subcontracting strategy, identification and technical evaluation of suppliers who provide design, engineering and consultancy services and evaluate their workload and performance.
  • Accountable for site/design engineering return of experience, drive lessons learned documentation & design validation, functional knowledge capitalization through check sheets, design guides, training curriculum, work instructions, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with quality procedures defined at the project and region level, support internal and external audits, and resolve non-conformances in a timely manner.
  • Develop and use Lean methods throughout the team through training, Lean projects, Kaizens, and other initiatives
  • Demonstrate EHS leadership and ensure zero deviation plan from safety policies
  • Lead business growth transformation initiatives, with a team mindset, to increase competitiveness, and drive productivity & efficiency while overcoming unknowns in a high growth environment
  • Retain key talent through regular contact including recognition, coaching, and development planning. Provide direction, oversight, and coach civil engineers.
  • Resource planning and leveling for a team of civil engineers
  • Plan succession of senior civil engineers

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university
  • 15+ years of experience with high voltage substation civil/structural design including EPC projects
  • 5+ years of experience leading a substation civil engineering team
  • Professional Engineering License in the United States and willingness to review & seal drawings

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time, including international, and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university
  • 5+ years of experience managing civil engineers, including resource loading, performance reviews, recruiting/hiring, training/development plans, and salary planning
  • 15+ years of experience in civil structural design and execution of high-voltage substation EPC projects, including the design of equipment foundations (transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, reactors, CTs & PTs, Surge Arresters, GIS, Synchronous Condensers, STATCOM, etc.), control room and high-voltage equipment enclosures and their foundations, steel supports, dead-end structures), lightning masts, duct banks, manholes, trenches, and drainage systems for AIS, GIS, FACTS, and/or HVDC EPC projects in United States and Canada
  • Project Management experience on power systems EPC projects
  • Background in Substation 3D design including BIM (Revit) models
  • Experience in technical problem solving- demonstrates technical mastery with detailed knowledge of theoretical and practical applications in civil and structural engineering related to high voltage electrical substations Mastering of involved discipline (process, tools, technical aspects)
  • Demonstrates ownership & accountability, judgment and decision making, influences & inspires team, creates a vision and strategy, and has passion for the role
  • Background experience in reviewing architectural and mechanical/electrical/plumbing drawings for high voltage substation buildings
  • Strong influencing and relationship building skills
  • Fluent in English, speaking and writing
  • In depth knowledge of US/Canada utility customer design and construction standards & industry codes and standards in north America and experience leading an engineering team supporting tendering and execution teams
  • Demonstrated presentation skills and ability to succinctly communicate complex messages
