About the Role
Are you looking for an internship that provides hands-on experience in AI Product Development and the chance to make connections at one of the largest publishers of education and research content?
The Springer Nature Opening Doors internship with SNAIL (SN AI Labs) is a paid opportunity in Groningen, The Netherlands for students and recent graduates to gain experience in research, education and science news publishing in our journals, books or magazines.
Many perspectives and lived experiences remain underrepresented in the publishing industry. This underrepresentation has historically affected a wide range of groups, including Black people, Indigenous people, and people of colour, first‑generation university students, people from socio‑economically disadvantaged backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, people from underrepresented social castes, religious minorities and people with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions.
We are looking for talented candidates from all backgrounds, with excellent skills in a range of fields, and we are committed to creating an inclusive internship, with a cohort that reflects a broad range of voices and experiences.
The successful applicant will spend up to six months within SNAIL, part of the COO division of Springer Nature. If selected for this internship, you will be:
Support the design and refinement of AI-enabled manuscript screening tools
Help translate editorial needs into clear product requirements and user stories
Evaluate LLM-based prototypes and summarise performance, risks, and opportunities
Assist in user research, workflow mapping, and identifying areas where automation adds value
Collaborate with product managers, scientists, and engineers to shape feature roadmaps
Contribute to documentation, product specifications, and internal presentations.

About you:
Essential:
Strong analytical skills
Familiarity with modern AI/LLM concepts
Ability to interpret model outputs and communicate insights clearly
Interest in product development and user‑centric problem solving
Comfortable working with data and basic prototyping tools
Desirable:
Experience experimenting with LLMs (prompting, evaluation, or lightweight prototyping)
Exposure to product management, UX research, or agile workflows
Familiarity with scientific publishing or research communication
Interest in responsible‑AI principles and their application in products
Available to start in June 2026 for an internship of up to six months.
Fluent in English and have an existing right to live and work in The Netherlands.
